Bob's apples are growing so big. 

Fall is the apple season. 

Farmers markets are filled with fresh local harvest...

Figs are growing. 

Container figs seem to bloom later in the season. 

Works out for me :)

This is a second pair of figs higher up on the tree.

I've been extremely lucky this year!

Fig Season

Fig Season is Here, is Here, is Here :)

This is the first fig from this fig tree! 

Figs are ripe when the are soft

 when you squish them a little.

Fresh figs from your own garden taste earthier

and less sweet. More of a milder fig flavour.

These lovely figs are from my mom's fig trees. 

I am so lucky to have a mother who loves to garden, and to share. 

I get these beauties dropped off to me every couple of day :)

So ripe and delicious. 

Also a great addition to any smoothie.

And... These one are from the store.

All three are equally delicious ;)

Lesson Learned...

Sometimes I can be very spontaneous in my gardening. I won't do my research first and thus learn valuable lessons...

This year the lesson I learned was to not transplant fruit trees when they are growing fruit. I did this with Bob the Apple Tree, my Fig Tree, and the Black Raspberry bush...

Bob originally had a lot of blooms that would have turned into apples. I transplanted him because I was too eager and he was only left with 2 apples... Same goes for the Fig Tree and Raspberry bush.

However... The Fig bush has 3 new babies! Originally it had lots of baby figs, but only 1 survived the transplant. I checked on him the other day and he has 3 new blooms :)

P.S. the grape vines are doing really well...

Container Gardening: Fig Trees

Figggggg Trees

My mom has multiple fig trees in her garden. Every year when the fig are ready to pick she dehydrates them and shares. This is one of the best times of the year.

This tree came already in soil. I added a banana (for potassium), egg shells (for calcium and irrigation), and coffee grounds (for nitrogen) to the garden soil. Other than that I put it in it's new pot home and watered it constantly.

Later in the season, an important step is to add netting to the tree. This will save you from fighting birds for the fruit ;)
Can wait to munch on some figs later in the summer...

Fun Fact: Fig Trees fruit on 2 year old branches.

Fun Fact 2: Fig Trees planted in the ground will create runner trees. Then you'll have a forrest of fig trees.
